Panchakarma is a renowned Ayurvedic therapy that falls into a category of Ayurvedic treatments known as Shodhana Chikitsa (Bio-cleansing therapy). The name, Panchakarma, is derived from two words, where pancha means ‘five’ and karma means ‘actions’ or ‘procedures.’ It consists of five procedures designed for internal purification by eliminating toxins from the body that help restore balance and harmony within the body and mind and promote overall well-being.
Panchakarma treatment has broad therapeutic benefits as it offers relief from a wide range of ailments, which include diabetes, respiratory problems, digestive diseases, skin disorders, neurological disorders, premature hair-greying and many others. The treatment is personalized by the Ayurvedic practitioner after assessing the unique constitution, imbalance of the doshas, and specific health needs of the individual.
The Five Procedures in Panchakarma Treatment:
At Daksha Ayuretreat, the Panchakarma therapy comprises the following five procedures:
- Vamanam (Therapeutic Emesis): This procedure involves guided emesis or vomiting to eliminate toxins accumulated in the upper respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. It is highly effective in treating conditions due to excessive Kapha dosha.
- Virechanam (Purgation Therapy): This procedure involves administering purgatives to induce controlled bowel movements that help cleanse the bowel and eliminate toxins that cause Pitta dosha from the liver, gallbladder and intestines.
- Kashaya Vasthi (Therapeutic Enema using Herbal Decoction, Oil, Honey etc.): Vasthi is a procedure that involves administering herbal decoctions and oils through an enema to remove accumulated toxins from the lower gastrointestinal tract. In Kashaya Vasthi, an enema using herbal decoctions, oils, powders (choornam) or honey is administered on an empty stomach.
- Anuvasana Vasthi (Therapeutic Enema using Medicated Oil or Ghee): In Anuvasana Vasthi, enema is administered using medicated oil (taila) or ghee (ghritham) after food.
